{"id":253,"date":"2014-10-21T10:30:49","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T16:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/?p=253"},"modified":"2019-07-11T22:34:28","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T04:34:28","slug":"el-sabor-taste-a-la-tica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/el-sabor-taste-a-la-tica\/","title":{"rendered":"El Sabor: Taste a la Tica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cEl Sabor, el Sabor!\u201d \u2013 This friendly shout fills Academia Tica\u2019s patio every school day at noon, when hungry students flock towards the sound of Caribbean music and the wide smile of Don George.\u00a0He emerges from a van and opens the\u00a0side door to\u00a0reveal\u00a0baskets\u00a0and coolers brimming with treats, which hungry students have been\u00a0yearning for throughout the morning\u2019s intensive Spanish classes.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u00b4s not just any food, either.\u00a0Don George\u00a0specializes in typical fare\u00a0from the Caribbean part of Costa Rica in addition to snacks like hamburgers, sandwiches, brownies and cheese cake. Everything is\u00a0home-made by George and his wife every morning. He is always willing to explain every type of meal to\u00a0students if they are about to eat something for the first time and often he also\u00a0lets you\u00a0try some things before you buy. Even after several\u00a0months of living and studying at Academia Tica, it is\u00a0still possible finding new things in George\u2019s van and to not yet\u00a0get &#8220;fed up&#8221; at lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some meals you should have a go at:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_634\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-634\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/george.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-634\" src=\"http:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/george-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"George with his famously delicious rice and beans. \" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/george-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/george-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/george-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.academiatica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/george.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George with his famously delicious rice and beans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacarina.com\/contenido\/empanadas-de-pollo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Empanada de pollo<\/a>:\u00a0a pastry made of cornmeal and filled with spiced chicken, typically eaten in Costa Rica as a snack while having a (black!) coffee<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/pati-caribeno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat\u00ed<\/a>: similar to an empanada but stuffed with minced beef and available in three different levels of spiciness\u00a0\u2013 watch out for the red cross on the paper bag!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/vigoron-porteno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vigor\u00f3n<\/a>: the typical Costa Rican picnic dish comes with yucca, tomato, cabbage and crispy pork crackling<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/ceviche-la-tica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ceviche<\/a>: a fresh fish cocktail with lime juice, chili and cilantro<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/rice-and-beans-con-pollo-caribeno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arroz con pollo del Caribe<\/a>:\u00a0in contrast to the Costa Rican much-loved \u201cGallo Pinto\u201d (rice and beans) this meal is enriched with coconut milk. George serves it along with chicken, salad, fried plantain and a fruit juice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And\u00a0for those of you with a sweet tooth:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/pan-de-yuca-jamaiquino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pan de yuca<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/queque-de-zanahoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zanahoria<\/a>\u00a0o\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/mini-receta-dos-pinos-pan-de-banano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banano<\/a>:\u00a0a piece of delicious cake of yucca, carrot or banana &#8211; not too sweet and very moist\/mellow<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/tamal-asado-de-doris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tamal<\/a>: there are three different types of \u201ctamales\u201d made from\u00a0cornmeal. George offers the sweet \u201cTamal asado\u201d which looks a bit like German cheese cake<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/recetasdecostarica.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/tartaras-cocadas.html\">Cocada<\/a>: a sun-shaped pastry from Jamaica with a sweet and spiced coconut stuffing<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/arroz-con-dulce-de-leche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arroz con leche<\/a>:\u00a0this cup of sweet rice pudding with cinnamon is one of the students&#8217; favorites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saboresenlinea.com\/recetas\/tres-leches-clasico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tresleches<\/a>: a typical Nicaraguan dessert brought to Costa Rica by the immigrants. The sponge cake is soaked with three types of milk and topped with a rich cream.
